Will The Thai Culture Minister Ban This Youtube Video?

Will The Thai Culture Minister Ban This Youtube Video?

There is an editorial in today’s Bangkok Post, Thai culture? Scratch the very idea, that discusses Thai culture somewhat.

The article talks about an essay put out by the Ministry of Culture titled “How to Raise Your Children so that They Become Civilised.” geared toward parents and how they raise their children the Thai way.   The author initially thought the essay was a joke.

Thailand Minister of Culture

Thailand Minister of Culture

You may recall during Thai New Year, Songkran, Thailand had its image damaged when three teenage girls danced topless in the heart of Bangkok and the video spread like wildfire on the Internet. The previous Culture Minister had a fit and had the girls arrested.

Well, we have a new video by a Thai group called Turbi, that, as of today, has over 9 million views and will most likely be seen by the prudish elite Thai government officials as damaging to the pristine image of Thailand.

Now this music video could be argued isn’t music at all – just a cute, young girl scratching her snatch and moaning suggestively.  Oh, and wearing very little clothing.  I have seen go-go girls in Pattaya wearing more.

The video was popular when first uploaded 2 months ago garnering about 2 million views.  But, after going on TV two days ago for an interview, views have jumped to over 9 million.

Apparently the interviewer asked the lead singer crotch-scratcher why she does what she does since a good Thai lady would never do that in public.

She gave an answer that is straight out of the Pattaya Bar Girl’s textbook – everybody is doing it – people like it – they welcome it and give me rewards – I am only trying to make a living – to help my parents so they don’t have to work hard.

So, the author is now asking if this is the “new” Thai culture – more contemporary and out in the open.

I think the Minister of Culture will have a lot to say about this since it is now in the press and will do everything she can to get the video removed, which will just make it more popular.

You can watch it here – while it is still at Youtube.

Let’s see what the Culture Minister does.
