The title is a an article headline from The Nation today.  I am not surprised in the least.  But, the funny stuff is in the legal authorities trying to explain that being rich and famous had nothing at all to do with it.  Yeah, right.

In case you are unfamiliar, on 27 December 2010, Orachorn ‘Praewa’ Thephasadin Na Ayudhya, got into an accident in Bangkok and the end result was 9 dead.  The girl, who is 16, admitted that she was speeding, doesn’t have a license, and allegedly caused the accident.

She comes from a wealthy family in Bangkok and is considered one of the “elite”.  Here are some of the reasons she was “released without bail”.

she turned herself in to police and had not been arrested” – this is pure Bullshit.  She was in the accident on 27 Dec 2010 and was ordered to report to the police on 9 January 2011.  Why she wasn’t arrested for manslaughter on the 27th is beyond me.  Why she got to hang out anywhere she wanted until 9 January is also beyond me.  She did not turn herself in.  She reported as ordered.

Unlike underage street racers sent to homes for youths after arrests by police, the girl was not arrested, and thus not subject to detention at any department facilities.“   So if you are racing on the streets, you get arrested and go to a home for youths, but if you cause an accident and 9 people die, you don’t even get arrested.  Makes sense to me.

“The girl has been charged with causing deaths and injuries through carelessness and driving without a licence. These could result in her receiving a jail term of up to seven years and a small fine, respectively.” But in the meantime she is free to do what she wants.

“the girl was likely to get a suspended sentence, not because of social privilege, but due to her confession, her remorse, her family’s payment of compensation to victims, or mandatory rehabilitation.” There was no remorse shown when she was on her Blackberry right after the accident and her apology was lame at best.  Methinks it is the payment of compensation that will keep her ass out of jail.

“The juvenile procedural law focuses on changing young offenders’ behaviour, not on punishing them” The way that I see it, the law is made so that people under 18 can do anything and not face any consequences.  Great message to send out to the youth of Thailand.

This is absolutely ridiculous.  If I had caused this horrendous accident and 9 people died, I would have been arrested on the spot, and then my neck would have been measured for a noose.

She should be tried as an adult and face 9 counts of manslaughter.  But, it won’t happen.  She will never see the inside of a jail.  Mommy big bucks won’t allow that to happen.
