Orachorn “Praewa” Thephasadin na Ayudhya is looking to be a lot poorer.

Remember back in December 2010 there was a nasty accident in Bangkok involving a 17 year old girl, Orachorn “Praewa” Thephasadin na Ayudhya, crashing into a van and the end result was 9 people dead.

Miss Orachorn “Praewa” Thephasadin na Ayudhya didn’t slam into some poor folks from Laos – she hit some highly esteemed faculty members from a major University and the Thailand Institute of Scientific Technological Research.  These were upper middle class Thais.

The family of one of victims, Sastra Chaothiang, is suing Orachorn “Praewa” Thephasadin na Ayudhya for 36 million Thai Baht. That is roughly $1.2 million US dollars.

The mother claims that she has now lost money that she used to get from her son when he was alive.  She stated that his salary was 50,000 baht per month and calculates his future earnings for the next 28 years to be 36 million baht.

Either The Nation got the numbers wrong, or someone doesn’t know how to do math.  If the mother received her son’s entire salary monthly, 50,000 baht per month for 28 years is more like 12,800,000 baht.  Maybe she tossed in some additional money for pain and suffering.  And, if you divide 36 million by 336 months, it works out to over 107,000 baht per month which is more than double his current salary.  I think Thai math is similar to Thai logic.

Not sure how they did the calculations, but it looks like Orachorn “Praewa” Thephasadin na Ayudhya is going to join the ranks of the poor.  Well, her mom and dad are going to join since I doubt that the teen’s allowance will cover the lawsuit.

I also wonder if the other 8 families will stand in line and also file lawsuits against Orachorn “Praewa” Thephasadin na Ayudhya. If they all filed for the same amount it would work out to 324 million Thai baht – over 10 million dollars.

There were also hints in the article from The Nation that the Thailand Institute of Scientific Technological Research may also file a suit based on the money that they had invested in Khun Sastra  over the past 10 years.

Some of the crash victims were employed by Thammasat University in Bangkok and the University may also file for damages.

Whatever eventually happens, it looks Miss Orachorn “Praewa” Thephasadin na Ayudhya and her family are not going to get off as cheaply as the kid that drove his daddy’s Porsche and cut the 17-year old girl from Laos in half.  It only cost him 350,000 Thai baht.

And, still no mention of any criminal charges other than her lawyer delaying things as long as possible.

If this winds up being a cash only deal with no hard time for Orachorn “Praewa” Thephasadin na Ayudhya, it looks like the family may have to move to Khon Kaen and work the fields.
