If you are from Laos and you are hit by a Porsche and are the victim of a hit and run accident, you are worth $17,000.

Last Friday there was a terrible accident in Pathum Thani – a 19-year old boy was driving his daddy’s Porsche and struck a 17-year old girl from Laos and cut her in half with her upper torso crashing through the windshield and landing in the passenger seat.

His father, the owner of the Porsche, stalled the police for a day or so saying that his son needed to attend a festival to honor the family’s ancestors.  The teenager eventually showed up at the police station along with his crew in matching outfits and sunglasses.  He is also wearing a hat with the slogan “In you, not on you”.  Hopefully he doesn’t understand English well.

He has admitted that he was driving the Porsche 120 kph but I seriously believe that he was going much faster.  Bangkok taxis go faster than that on the tollway.

And, yesterday, he showed up at the poor girl’s funeral where he apologized to the mother and told her that he would compensate her with 350,000 Thai baht of which 50,000 is to pay for the funeral.  The mother will also get 200,000 baht from an insurance company.

So, there you have it.  Get run into and sliced in half by the rich kid in rich daddy’s Porsche and your family will get 1/2 million baht or about $17,000 US dollars.

I have only read that Peerapol Thaksinthaweesap is being charged with reckless driving and hit-and-run.  Haven’t read anywhere that he will be charged for manslaughter.

A good forensics team should be able to determine the actual speed that he was driving, but that won’t happen.  We will take him at his word that he was driving 120 kilometers per hour.  After all, he is rich, so he must be telling the truth.

And, since daddy stalled for him with the Thai police, this gave any alcohol or drugs a chance to get out of his system and I do not know if the police even checked to see if there were drugs in his body.

I am sure that his legal team is already preparing his case rounding up “eye-witnesses” who saw the girl bolt from behind a bus.  The lawyers will probably also blame the bus company and say that the buses were parked illegally or something similar.  Anything to deflect away from the teenage boy.  Thai style – blame the victim.

Another tragic loss on Thailand’s roads.  No justice for the poor. No criminal charges for the elite.   No change in the laws.  No enforcement of the law.  This is Thailand where your your daughter can get cut in half by a speeding Porsche and all you get in return for your daughter’s life is $17,000.

I understand making room for a party, or to pay last respects, but what I don’t understand is the complete lack of consideration for others.  Hopefully, this won’t result in a traffic fatality.
