Faith, superstition, or just a nice belief – that is what Sai Sin is about. Every time I have visited Thailand and gone to a temple (wat) to make merit and give a small donation, I receive a blessing from the local monk.  This usually includes a small prayer, sprinkling some water, and having a small string tied to my wrist.

This is supposed to bring good luck, happiness, wealth, safety, or whatever else you are looking for.  Perhaps even the love of your life.

Sai Sin String

Call it what you want, but many Thai‘s and also many foreigners (farangs) believe in the power of a Buddhist blessing.  Most of us also wear Buddha amulets around our neck for safety and protection.

My mother-in-law is a firm believer and every time I have come to Thailand, she always has a string in her pocket that has been blessed.  She puts it on and also says a small prayer.

The most I have ever received was at our wedding reception.  It is customary for all of the guests to come up and place one on me and one on my wife.  I had close to 100 on my wrist.  When we got back to the hotel room, I asked my wife how long do I need to wear all of these, and she cut away all but 3 (auspicious number) and told me wear them as long as I like.

Believe or not – it is up to the individual.  But, why take a chance.
