May 13, 2010 marked the day for the Royal Ploughing Ceremony. Watched this on TV with English commentary. Very interesting ceremony.
Two Brahma Bulls are walked around ploughing (plowing) a ceremonial field and different types of rice are scattered in the plowed field.
Once completed, the two bulls are offered 7 different types of food and depending on what they eat, the Royal Astrologer forecasts the upcoming year.
This year is forecast average rain fall and prosperity.
The Crown Prince presided over the ceremony and also presented awards to agriculturists.
The best part was when the ceremony was officially over and the Crown Prince departed. There was a mad scramble to the plowed field to pick up the special grains of rice to keep as good luck charms or to plant with one’s crop. It looked like a rugby scrum with people fighting for a few grains of rice.
Oh well, this is Thailand
