Today’s Bangkok Post is reporting that the Department of Special Investigations (DSI) announced that they are willing to conduct an investigation into the Thai Police and their handling of the horrendous accident on 27 December 2010 that killed 9 people.Apparently, family members of the victims met with the Justice authorities yesterday to express their concern that the Thai Police may not be totally forthcoming in case against the 16-year old driver, Orachorn or “Praewa” Thephasadin na Ayudhya, that caused the crash.

Justice Minister Pirapan Salirathavibhaga, who oversees the DSI, said he did not expect the police to do anything dishonest as the public was keeping a close watch on the findings in the case.

I guess if it wasn’t such a high visibility case then it would be OK for the Thai Police to be dishonest.

Some families of the victims are concerned that police might be influenced by the teenager’s well-connected family.

Regardless of who is checking on who, this is a fact of life in Thailand – the rich and famous elite of Bangkok will have their way by sprinkling baht in every direction.

Bangkok Crash Victims

About the only thing that may help the victims a little bit is that some of the victims were also part of the Bangkok upper crust – one is a lecturer at Thammasat University and a couple were students there.  These are not your average middle-class Thais.

Mr Parinya said the families of those killed had told him the driver’s lawyer had contacted them to offer compensation. He did not know if all the families had been contacted.

This is the  part I am waiting for.  How much will it cost the parents of Orachorn or “Praewa” Thephasadin na Ayudhya to keep her out of jail? Nine dead and five injured could be quite a few million baht.  Keeping her out of prison will cost even more.

I say, forget the negotiated compensation to keep the girl out of jail.  Yes, the family needs to compensate the victims’ families for their losses, but there should be no negotiation to keep the girl free.  She should be tried as an adult and be charged with nine counts of manslaughter along with reckless driving and nt having a license.

Will it happen.  I don’t think so.  Bangkok’s elite doesn’t go to jail.  They just pay their way out.

Here is a video reminder of the tragic night:
