Narathiwat Prison Riot – Who Is In Charge?

Narathiwat Prison Riot – Who Is In Charge?

Adding to my list of incompetents that brighten up my day is Prison commander Suphot Suwantip and the Governor of Narathiwat Province.

Seems there was a small prison riot at his facility that got out of hand and all these losers can do is point fingers away from himself.

A Real Prison In USA

Yesterday, there was a small riot in Narathiwat, in Southern Thailand.  This is one of the provinces (along with Yala and Pattani) where there has been lots of terrorist activities.  So, many of the bad guys in this prison are terrorists.

The reason for the riot?

The chaos began at about 7am when Deputy Narathiwat Governor Dejrat Simsiri led a 150-strong team of police, military and civilians to search the male prisoners’ dormitory as part of a drug-suppression operation, while the 999 male inmates were gathered in the yard. The officials were seizing methamphetamine, crystal meth and cell phones hidden in the dormitory when several inmates jailed for violations of national security, got upset and suddenly urged others to stop the search. The inmates hurled metal pipes, wooden sticks and stones at the officials.

Now, since this was headed up by a politician, two weeks before the election, it was most likely an event meant to earn some votes by showing how tough the government is on bad guys already in prison.

I can almost bet that the Deputy Gov was at the front of the pack for photos, and at the rear during the actual search.

The officials escaped but 25 were injured – 11 with serious head wounds. But no inmates were hurt.

Of course the officials escaped uninjured and I guess that the other 150-strong were in the process of running like crazy for the exit and a few received head wounds.  No inmates hurt is either a flat out lie, or an indication of who is in charge.

After hours of negotiations, the provincial governor, who went to try to control the situation, got the inmates to stop their protest.

More brilliant reporting by The Nation – uh – we might want to know what the Gov gave up in negotiations to get them to stop.

So, the Dep Gov goes to the prison with 150-strong force, and the Gov has to negotiate a settlement – not going to go over well with voters.  So, it is time for DAMAGE CONTROL!

He said it was tough to control rioting in the jail partly because it was located in the city centre.

Time to cause a diversion – blame the LOCATION!

Thanon urged a thorough check on how prohibited items were smuggled into the prison and punishment of any official involved in the smuggling.

Okay – set up a committee, conduct an investigation, and hope we can make it look good before the upcoming elections.

Prison commander Suphot Suwantip also blamed the location of the jail for problems controlling prisoners and said relocating the jail would be a good long-term solution. He said the prison wall wasn’t very high so people with bad intentions may be able to throw prohibited objects into the jail.

Getting the prison commander to back up your “LOCATION” theory is a good one – shows credibility to anyone with a kindergarten education. And look!  The prison commander has already figured out how contraband got inside the prison – low walls.

He has also already identified the perpetrators – people with bad intentions!  My grandmother taught me that the road to hell was paved with bad intentions, so they most definitely are the bad guys.

The prison holds 1,100 inmates – 140 of them for people who broke national security laws in the far South.

Why in hell does a prison, in the heart of terrorist country, with 140 who violated national security laws, have a wall that isn’t very high.  Why don’t they construct prisons in Thailand like the one in the photo above?

Love it when Thais cannot accept blame or responsibility.

Anyhow, the prison riot is over, and the investigations, probes, and photo ops will continue up until the 3 July elections when it will all be forgotten.
