Another road tragedy in Thailand and this time it is close to home in Khon Kaen.
A bus overturned heading from Nong Bua Lampu to Bangkok and 5 passengers were killed and 30 injured. The driver of the bus said that he was trying to overtake a truck but that the road was in poor condition causing him to lose control and plunge into the roadside in Nong Rua, near Khon Kaen.
If you have ever been to Thailand, not just Khon Kaen, and seen the way the bus drivers drive, especially on country roads, you will know that speed and incompetency caused the accident.
The poor condition of the road may have been a factor, but most likely it was the lack of driving skills and zooming like a bat out of hell that caused the deaths.
On a positive note, the driver was arrested in Khon Kaen for reckless driving causing deaths and injuries unlike the 16-year old in Bangkok who didn’t have to report to the police for about 9 days and then was released. She caused the deaths of 9 people and so far gets to spend her time at home and not behind bars.
The drivers of buses think they own the road and because the bus has a size advantage, everyone must get out of their way. The idiots drive insanely exceeding speed limits, pass on solid yellow lines, pass when opposing traffic is coming, fail to yield, and basically do everything wrong as drivers.
I am also willing to bet that there is no school to teach them how to drive, and no requirement for a public utility licensing, no testing, no nothing.
So, instead of fixing a major problem of van and bus drivers being totally incompetent risking the lives of others, the Thai Government is more concerned about imposing curfews on teenagers and bringing back caning to unruly school children.
Five more dead and 3o more injured in Khon Kaen, and the driver will probably get a small fine and be back on the roads again.
