Buddhist Lent begins today (26 July 2010) with the full moon in the 8th lunar month. This is a time for Buddhist monks to retreat to their temples for three months of meditation and prayer.
This goes back to a time when Lord Buddha saw that monks were wandering around the outside of the temple during growing season and thought that they may damage crops or insects and decided it would be better if they remained inside.
The monks still go out for morning alms but spend the remainder of the day within the walls of the temple. Many people were out this morning buying food and gifts to bring to the various temples around the city.
