Yesterday, as reported in The Nation, 15 districts in Nan Province, Isaan, Thailand, declared it to be a “Cold Spell Disaster”.
Why? Because the temperature dropped to a chilly 10 degrees Celsius or 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
I spent the past 25 years in Hawaii and 10 months in Isaan, Thailand and I understand that when it gets down below 60 F, it is time to get out a long sleeve shirt to wear with my shorts.
In Hawaii, if it dropped to below 55 F, then it was time to wear socks with my flip-flops.
But, declaring a disaster because it is 50 degrees out! Last time I checked, 0 degrees Celsius was freezing. Come on, put on a sweater or jacket. It isn’t that cold in Isaan.
I talked to my dad in Michigan yesterday and he told me that the temperature was 4 degrees F (about -11 C) and he was happy that there wasn’t a minus sign in front of the temp.
What I don’t understand is why 15 districts in one, and only one, province has declared this a cold spell disaster. Is it a way to get funds from the Thai Government to purchase blankets and jackets for the freezing masses in Nan province?
Or, is it a way to get Government funds to the area to be divvied up to the district leaders – kind of like the money for flood relief didn’t quite seem to get to the Isaan people who actually needed assistance.
When it gets cold enough in Thailand to have weather like in the picture above, then I will believe that there actually is a disaster in Isaan.
