Headed north to Chiang Khan on 3 December 2010 for an overnight stay at my wife’s uncle’s new homestay. The plan was to head out at 0400 and be in Chiang Khan by about 0700. My brother-in-law Em, and his girlfriend spent the night so that we would all be together when it came time to head out. We were to meet my wife’s cousin on the way.
But, there was a problem. Em’s car was acting up so he arranged to borrow one but it too had problems. So, we had to settle on a third car and we were on our way at 0500. Not bad considering 4 of us had to get ready with one bathroom, food had to be prepared, and gear had to be packed in cars 3 times.
We only made one stop along the way about one hour out from Khon Kaen – the shrine of 7-11 at the Jet Jiffy gas station.
We arrived at Uncle Pong’s house to find that he was not home. A couple of phone calls located him and we all met up at the Kaen Chiang Khan Homestay. Food was quickly prepared and a late breakfast/early lunch was had.
The Kaen Chiang Khan Homestay was not 100% ready for visitors as the grand opening was set for 10 December 2010.
Two of the four rooms were ready for guests but no furnishings were set up yet. So, a quick curtain hanging and a bed mat was laid out and we got some pictures.
We needed to get some additional furniture moved and set up to make the common area of the place more appealing. This was already planned; our arrival made it happen quicker.
Then we moved outside to pretty up the porch and the area in front of the Kaen Chiang Khan Homestay.
We also put some bicycles on display since this is the main mode of transportation for tourists in Chiang Khan.
Getting the Homestay in photo-shape and getting the pictures taken created an appetite in all of us so it was time for BBQ chicken and sticky rice.
We still had more than 1/2 a day left and Uncle Pong had a plan to drive around and take photos of the area to show all the great places to see when you holiday in Chiang Khan.
So, the whirlwind Chiang Khan temple tour was up next.
